Rivers State Students in ABU Cry Foul Over Alleged Neglect by Government
By Abdullahi Alhassan, Kaduna
Indigenes of Rivers State studying at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have alleged neglect by successive administrations in the state.
They alleged that both the past and present administrations in the state have been insensitive and nonchalant to their plight.
The President of the Rivers State Students Union, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria Chapter, Akio Jonah Kikpoye, stated this during a meeting of the union.
He noted that members of the union lack access to bursary allowances and scholarships, which has adversely affected their studies.
Kikpoye explained that members of the union have not benefitted from any scholarship or bursary scheme allegedly being offered by the Rivers State Government. He further lamented that the lack of funds to cater to the needs of their members is negatively affecting them.
The union president also alleged that Rivers State students in Ahmadu Bello University do not have a secretariat where they can hold meetings and other activities to foster a sense of belonging among members.
He said they had lodged their complaints since the last administration but to no avail.
Kikpoye, therefore, appealed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other well-meaning individuals to come to their aid by providing scholarships and bursary allowances to ease their studies.
