Rurum Mourns Death of Over 20 Kano Athletes in Road Accident
Member representing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of 19 young athletes from Kano State who lost their lives in a fatal road accident.
The athletes were returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival, known as the Gateway Games 2024, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when the accident occurred. Describing the incident as heartbreaking, Rurum said the victims were not only sportsmen but some of the brightest talents the state had produced.
According to the federal lawmaker, their dreams, passion, and commitment to excellence represented the spirit of Nigerian youth and their untimely deaths are a huge loss not only to their families and the people of Kano State but to the entire nation.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Kano State Government, and the Nigerian sports community,” he said. “I also pray for the quick recovery of those who sustained injuries in the accident. May Allah grant the deceased eternal rest and give their families the strength to bear this great loss.”
Rurum used the occasion to call on both federal and state authorities to intensify efforts towards improving road safety across the country. He stressed the need for concrete action to prevent future tragedies of this nature.
“Our fallen athletes may be gone, but their spirit, dedication, and love for sport will never be forgotten,” he added.
