SCI applauds Katsina’s new measures to strengthen teacher welfare, training
From Fauziyya Lawal, Katsina
Save the Children International SCI has commended the Katsina State Government for introducing key initiatives aimed at improving teacher welfare and professional development across the state. The organisation described the interventions as a major boost to education delivery, particularly in rural communities.
The commendation followed the 18th Executive Council decision chaired by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, during which the government approved a ₦30,000 rural teachers’ allowance per term, amounting to ₦90,000 per academic session, for teachers posted to remote areas.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Yusuf Suleiman Jibia, explained that the allowance is intended to encourage teachers to accept and remain in rural postings, thereby improving their commitment and performance in the classroom. “This incentive is meant to encourage teachers to accept rural postings, remain in those locations and improve their commitment to teaching,” he stated.
The government also approved the establishment of three Teacher Development Centres in Katsina, Daura and Funtua senatorial districts. According to the commissioner, the centres will provide continuous training programmes aimed at upgrading teaching practices and enhancing instructional delivery at both primary and secondary school levels. Trainers will be sourced from Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Isah Kaita College of Education and a pool of experienced retired teachers.
SCI praised the government’s proactive approach, noting that the rural allowance will boost teacher morale, ease their financial burden and improve retention in communities where qualified educators are most needed. The organisation further highlighted the importance of the Teacher Development Centres, describing them as a forward looking investment in professional growth and quality education.
The interventions reflect a strategic effort by the Radda administration to strengthen the education sector and ensure that children, regardless of their location, have access to competent and motivated teachers. SCI reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the state in achieving inclusive, high quality learning outcomes for all children.
