SCI impacts lives across Northern Nigeria
By Fauziyya Lawal, Katsina
Save the Children International SCI has continued to make a strong impact across Northern Nigeria, bringing hope to children and families affected by insecurity, poverty and displacement. The organization’s interventions in states such as Katsina, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara and Kaduna have restored access to education, improved child protection and supported community development.
Thousands of children who had dropped out of school due to insecurity are now back in classrooms, thanks to SCI’s education and protection programs. The organization has rebuilt classrooms, trained teachers and provided learning materials in partnership with local authorities and community leaders. Temporary and flexible learning centers have also been established in camps and host communities to ensure children continue learning even in hard to reach areas.
SCI has also placed special focus on girls’ education through its “Keeping Girls in School” campaign. The program has encouraged families to support the education of their daughters, helping to reduce early marriage and increase female enrollment. In Borno and Yobe states, SCI’s child protection initiatives have provided counseling and safety for children exposed to violence and trauma.
In addition to education, SCI’s health and nutrition programs have saved the lives of many children under five. Through community based nutrition projects, the organization provides food supplements, medical attention and health education for mothers in rural areas. Families are also supported with small business opportunities, helping them to meet their children’s basic needs and remain self reliant.
Save the Children has further strengthened its impact through collaboration with government agencies, including the Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board SUBEB. These partnerships have improved teacher capacity, promoted inclusive education for children with disabilities and introduced technology based learning to reach children affected by insecurity.
Community involvement remains central to SCI’s success. Traditional and religious leaders, parents and local volunteers are part of program planning and implementation, ensuring that interventions reflect local needs and realities. This approach has helped build trust, ownership and sustainability in the communities served.
From Batsari to Maiduguri, SCI’s presence continues to transform lives. The organization’s work has brought renewed hope to families, empowered children through education and promoted peace and development across Northern Nigeria.
