Security Takes Control of Jigawa Assembly Amid Impeachment Tensions
From Mika’il Tsoho, Dutse
A joint security team, comprising the police and Nigerian Civil Defense Corps, has assumed control of the Jigawa State House of Assembly as efforts to impeach Speaker Hon Aliyu Haruna Dangyating intensify.
Reports indicate that disgruntled members have initiated the impeachment process, citing alleged high-handedness, personalization of House affairs, and poor leadership. Investigation reveals substantial support from the majority of assembly members for the impeachment, termed the ‘Crusade for Liberation of Jigawa Assembly,’ causing tension in the state capital.
The impeachment move unfolds while Speaker Dangyating is on a foreign trip to Saudi Arabia with Governor Malam Umar Namadi, aiming to attract investors from the oil-rich country.
The combined police and civil defense team deployed to the assembly premises has restricted entry to anyone, including assembly staff. When questioned about the heightened security presence, State Police Command Spokesperson DSP Lawal Shisu Adam cited intelligence reports indicating a potential threat to public peace, prompting proactive security measures.
An anonymous senior assembly staff confirmed being denied access to the premises, raising concerns about the unusual restrictions. Speculation suggests that the impeachment threat may be used as leverage for the political interests of the aggrieved members.”
