The Yobe State Police Command has launched an investigation into a fresh case of gender-based violence involving sexual assault and substance abuse, leading to the arrest of a suspect.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkareem, the incident occurred on January 16, 2026, in Babbangida town, Tarmuwa Local Government Area.
According to the statement, operatives of the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters arrested one Aliyu Yarima, aged 35, of Potiskum Local Government Area, on January 26, 2026, following a distress report.
Preliminary findings revealed that the suspect allegedly lured a 16-year-old girl (name withheld) and gave her a soft drink laced with hard drugs, which rendered her unconscious. He then reportedly took her to his residence, where the assault occurred.
The victim, who sustained serious internal injuries, could not immediately report the incident until her condition worsened. She was later taken to the General Hospital in Babbangida, where medical examination confirmed the assault.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, psc, fdc, has condemned the act in strong terms and directed a discreet and comprehensive investigation to ensure justice is served.
The Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable persons and urged the public to promptly report all forms of sexual abuse and other criminal offences to the nearest police station.
