Stakeholders Advocate for Freedom of Expression, Civic Space in Nigeria

By Mustapha Salisu

A documentary screening organized by Gatefield Organization has sparked discussions on the shrinking civic space and the growing restrictions on freedom of expression in Nigeria.

The event, held on Saturday at DAG’s Kano Office, is part of an advocacy campaign which brought together civil society organizations, media practitioners, and journalists to address the increasing use of state forces to suppress citizens’ voices.

Speaking at the event, Sadiq Muhammad Mustapha, the Program Coordinator, emphasized urgency of protecting freedom of expression, which is a fundamental human right enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

He noted that despite this constitutional guarantee, authorities have increasingly deployed security agencies such as the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army to intimidate citizens and discourage public dissent.

“This gathering aims to create awareness among different groups, including civil society organizations and journalists, on how they can unite to defend their rights. Advocacy must continue to ensure the government upholds these rights, as they are legally protected under the Constitution” Mustapha stated.

Speaking earlier, Sadik Shehu, Program Officer at Bridge Connect, further highlighted the importance of understanding and asserting human rights. He pointed out that government policies often infringe upon these rights, either deliberately or through misinterpretation of laws.

“We are raising awareness, educating young people, and ensuring that everyone understands their rights. It is crucial to speak up with facts and ensure that freedom of speech is not unjustly policed by the authorities”Shehu said.

Shehu also stressed the importance of collaboration among media practitioners, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to bridge gaps in advocacy efforts towards amplifying the conversation on human rights and engaging relevant authorities.

“To achieve sustainable development and maintain our freedoms, we must collaborate,” he added. The media and civil society organizations need to unite in advocating for the rights and freedoms of all Nigerians” he said.

Ismail Ahmad, a Gidan Yanci fellow, who spoke to newsmen on behalf of other participants emphasized the need for journalists and social media users to understand laws on freedom of expression.

He noted that while free speech is a right, its misuse such as baseless accusations can have legal consequences. Awareness of these laws, he stressed, ensures responsible and ethical communication.
