Stay Hydrated: Expert Advice for Heatwave Relief
By Aisha Ndanusa Ibrahim
As the heatwave continues to scorch in Kano State, it’s more important than ever to prioritize hydration. Dr. Aishat Ahmed, a medical expert, during an interview with PRIME TIME NEWS Correspondent, emphasizes the numerous benefits of drinking water, from lubricating joints and delivering oxygen to regulating body temperature and flushing out waste products.
According to Dr. Ahmed, water is crucial for many bodily functions, and dehydration can lead to various health problems, including kidney damage, joint pain, and digestive issues. “Water helps dissolve minerals and nutrients, making them more accessible to the body. It also helps remove waste products. These two functions make water vital to the kidneys,” she explained.
Dr. Ahmed further warned that if the kidneys do not function properly, waste products and excess fluid can build up inside the body, leading to chronic kidney disease, which can result in kidney failure if left untreated. Additionally, not drinking enough water can increase the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.
So, how much water should we drink daily? Dr. Ahmed advises healthy individuals to drink at least 15.5 cups (for men) and 11.5 cups (for women) of water per day, depending on individual factors such as age, health conditions, and medications. However, it’s important to note that some people may need to limit their water intake due to certain health conditions or medications.
“But it’s not just about the amount of water; it’s also about making it a habit” She admonished.
Several individuals shared their personal tips for staying hydrated during the heatwave.

On her part, Rukayya Muhammad Bala drinks water frequently throughout the day and uses a mini rechargeable fan to beat the heat. “I try to drink at least two liters of water a day, and I make sure to shower at least twice a day,” she said.
