Supreme Court Overturns Appeal Court Ruling on Labour Party Leadership

The Supreme Court has nullified the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).

In a unanimous decision, a five-member panel of the apex court ruled that the Court of Appeal lacked jurisdiction to declare Abure as the party’s chairman, particularly after acknowledging that the case centered on the party’s internal leadership dispute.

The Supreme Court reaffirmed that leadership matters within a political party fall under internal affairs, over which courts have no jurisdiction.

The court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman and another party, declaring it meritorious. Additionally, it dismissed the cross-appeal submitted by the Abure faction of the Labour Party, deeming it unsubstantiated.
