SWAN Calls for Thorough Investigation into Fatal Accident Involving Kano Athletes

By Mustapha Salisu

The National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Mr. Benjamin Isaiah, has called on government authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of 22 Kano athletes returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.

Mr. Isaiah made this call when he led a delegation of sports journalists on a condolence visit to the Kano State Government. The delegation was received at the Government House by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

Speaking to journalists after delivering the association’s condolences, Mr. Isaiah emphasized that the incident was not just a tragedy but a national concern that demands immediate and serious attention from all levels of government.

“These are precious lives that were lost on national assignment. They were not just travelers, but patriots who went to represent their state and, by extension, the nation. Beyond mourning, there is a pressing need for the government to investigate the root cause of this accident to prevent future occurrences” he said.

He called for the immortalization of the fallen athletes but stressed that symbolic gestures alone were not enough. According to him, the frequency of such tragic incidents during national sports events is alarming, and only a comprehensive review of travel logistics and safety standards can prevent future disasters.

Mr. Isaiah criticized the current conditions under which athletes travel for national assignments, citing poor transportation arrangements, long hours on the road, and the use of unfit vehicles.

He compared the treatment of athletes to that of public officials, noting that while politicians often travel in chartered flights and helicopters, athletes who risk their lives to bring glory to their states are forced to endure dangerous journeys in unroadworthy vehicles.

The SWAN president vowed that the association would issue a strong communique and continue to advocate for policy changes that would ensure the protection of athletes.

He called on all states to prioritize safe, efficient transportation for sports contingents, particularly during national festivals.

“We will not let this be swept under the carpet. We owe it to the memory of those young heroes. If necessary, athletes should be flown to competition venues. Their lives are just as valuable as the medals they are expected to win,” he declared.

Earlier in his remarks, Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo appreciated the show of solidarity by SWAN, describing it as a powerful gesture of national unity and brotherhood.

He expressed gratitude on behalf of the Kano State Government and the people of Kano, noting that such support brings comfort during this difficult time of mourning.
