Efforts to boost public awareness on tax rights, obligations, and grievance redress mechanisms have received a new push as the Tax Justice and Governance Platform, Kano, met with the management of the Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) to unveil plans for the third phase of its tax education radio series.
Speaking during the meeting held at KIRS Head Office on Monday, the Program Lead of the Tax Justice and Governance Platform, Kano, Sadiq Muhammad Mustapha, revealed that the organization has, over time, been supporting the revenue agency through public sensitization on tax processes via radio programming.
“We have so far conducted two series of the tax education radio program and are currently preparing for the third. This phase will feature eight interactive radio slots allocated to KIRS to educate the public on tax rights, obligations, and the channels available for lodging complaints,” he said.
According to him, the sessions are tailored to address pressing gaps in public knowledge about tax administration, especially among residents in rural areas and those operating within the informal sector. The upcoming series is expected to highlight key developments in tax policy and reform at both the national and sub-national levels.
Sadiq said the discussions will focus on key issues including the new national tax reform bill, ongoing IGR reforms in Kano, and how taxpayers can use the Grievance Redress Mechanism to address disputes.
He added that, the sessions which will be aired on Guarantee Radio Station, aim to simplify tax processes and bridge the communication gap between taxpayers and revenue authorities.
“We’ve made all necessary arrangements with the station. In addition to the talk shows, we will run weekly radio jingles to inform the public about the program and encourage participation,” Sadiq stated.
He hinted that listeners will be able to call in, ask questions, and share their concerns directly with KIRS representatives. In cases where immediate responses are not available, Sadiq confirmed that officials will follow up and provide feedback in subsequent episodes.
PRIME TIME NEWS gathered that, Tax Justice is now awaiting a formal response from KIRS regarding topic validation and the nomination of relevant personnel who will participate in the sessions.
Also speaking, Muhammad Abba Aliyu, Executive Director of Compliance and Enforcement at KIRS, commended the Tax Justice and Governance Platform for its consistent support to the Service.
Abba pledged to promptly validate all the requests presented by the Platform to ensure a smooth take-off of the radio programme, which he described as a vital tool for enhancing taxpayer knowledge and understanding of the tax system.
