The Unlawful Arrest of Journalist: A Grave Threat to Press Freedom in Kano
The recent arrest of two journalists at the directive of Honorable Commision of Information, Ibrahim Waiya, is an outright assault on press freedom and a clear attempt to silence those who dare to speak the truth.
This act not only undermines democratic values but also exposes the danger of allowing individuals with questionable character to wield authority unchecked.
It is very alarming that power is being used as a tool to suppress rather than serve ice to humanity. If those in power believe they can intimidate us into silence simply because they have a little cash and seasonal influence, they are gravely mistaken. As patriotic youth of Kano state, we stand firm against any form of oppression, and we declare unequivocally that you cannot oppress the truth.
True leadership is built on integrity, accountability, and willingness to listen to criticism. However, when officials resort to using force against journalists and advocates who are merely fulfilling their duties of informing the public, it raises a crucial question- What are they trying to hide? Or rather what is he trying to hide?
To those who believe they can operate with impunity, consider this a warning, we the people of Kano are watching. Leadership is not about self-glorification or silencing dissent, it is about serving the people with honor. We will not allow our state to be hijacked by individuals whose interests do not align with the public good.
If you think the youth are merely rascals for speaking out their minds or for criticizing your leadership, I am telling you we are more than ready to prove otherwise. The youth you can deal with is the vice conscience, the guardian of justice, and the defenders of free speech. We will not be bullied, and we will not be silenced
To Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Sir you must recognize that the more power is handed over to individuals with questionable integrity, the more chaotic and dysfunctional our state will become. Governance is not a playground for personal ego-driven conflict. It is a sacred duty to uplift the people and foster an environment where justice prevails.
If leaders like Waiya continue to use their position to stifle freedom of expression, Kano state will not progress, rather it will regress. The state deserves officials who respect the principle of democracy and uphold the fundamental rights of every citizen, including the right to free speech and press freedom.
To those who believe they can manipulate power for personal gain, you will leave us with no other choice than to tell the people who you truly are. The people of Kano will not stand idly by while our rights are trampled
And to the government, choose your allies wisely, for the wrong choices will only lead to the downfall of the state.
To us who value justice, let us unite to gather and refuse to be silenced.
