From Tongnaan Bawa, Jos
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed security chiefs to go after those responsible for the recent killings in Plateau State.
The President gave the order during a town hall meeting with stakeholders in Jos on Thursday, where he also instructed the Minister of Defence to immediately strengthen security operations in the state.
He announced that the Federal Government will deploy five thousand CCTV cameras across Plateau to improve intelligence gathering, surveillance, and rapid response to threats.
President Tinubu was in Jos to sympathize with the people over the deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, which claimed more than twenty-eight lives on Palm Sunday.
Condemning the incident, the President said he was elected to ensure peace and not to create widows and widowers.
He added that both he and Governor Caleb Mutfwang were elected on the promise of peace and prosperity, stressing that the continued loss of lives is unacceptable.
Earlier, Governor Mutfwang welcomed the President and described the attack as a temporary setback, noting that Plateau had been enjoying relative peace and attracting investments before the incident.
He expressed confidence that with federal support and ongoing security efforts, the state will overcome its challenges.
The governor also commended security agencies for preventing several attacks and revealed that a Security Council meeting had been held, with key decisions taken.
He recalled that insecurity in the state has persisted for nearly three decades, spanning the administrations of Joshua Dariye, Jonah Jang, and Simon Lalong.
Governor Mutfwang, however, said the current administration offers a renewed platform for unity among Plateau leaders.
Also speaking, former Governor Jonah Jang called for a follow-up meeting with the President in Abuja to discuss lasting solutions to the crisis.
He warned against attempts to disrupt upcoming elections and expressed optimism that ongoing sensitization efforts will succeed.
Our correspondent, reports that goodwill messages were also received from Senator Simon Lalong and the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba.
