Tinubu Reaffirms January 2026 Commencement of New Tax Laws

By Mustapha Salisu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that the implementation of the new tax laws will commence on January 1, 2026, as earlier scheduled, dismissing speculations of any delay or alteration.

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy) revealed, Tinubu stated that the new tax reforms  including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, and the remaining acts set for January 2026 —would proceed as planned.

Describing the reforms as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for the country, the President explained that the new laws were not intended to increase taxes but to support structural reset, drive harmonisation, and uphold dignity while strengthening the social contract between government and citizens.

Tinubu urged stakeholders to support the implementation phase, which he said had now entered the delivery stage, noting that the government was aware of public discourse surrounding alleged changes to some provisions of the newly enacted tax laws.

He maintained that no substantial issue had been identified to warrant any disruption to the reform process.

“Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures,” Tinubu said.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to due process and the integrity of enacted laws, adding that the Presidency would continue to collaborate with the National Assembly to ensure the swift resolution of any emerging issues.

He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would act in the overriding public interest to maintain a tax system that promotes prosperity and shared responsibility.
