Tinubu Reappoints Buba Marwa as NDLEA Chairman for Another Five-Year Term
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for a second five-year term.
Marwa, originally appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021, will now lead the agency until 2031. Before joining the NDLEA, he served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020.
A retired military officer from Adamawa State, Marwa previously served as military governor of Lagos and Borno States. He is an alumnus of the Nigerian Military School and Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), and over his career held key roles including brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to then Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, academic registrar of the NDA, Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, and Defence Adviser at Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the UN.
He holds a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
Marwa’s leadership at the NDLEA has been marked by major drug seizures and arrests, including more than 73,000 suspected traffickers and over 15 million kilogrammes of illicit drugs. The agency has also intensified its nationwide anti-drug abuse campaigns during his tenure.
President Tinubu described the reappointment as a vote of confidence, urging Marwa to sustain the momentum in tackling drug trafficking and abuse across the country.
The announcement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
