TJ&GP Pushes for Tax Reform in Kano

The Tax Justice and Governance Platform (TJ&GP) Kano Chapter recently embarked on an advocacy campaign to address tax-related issues in the state.
On Thursday, a delegation led by Dr. Muhammad Mustapha Yahaya, Executive Director of Dispute Resolution & Development Initiative (formerly DAG), met with Kano State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Alh. Musa Suleiman Shanono.
Dr. Yahaya emphasized the TJ&GP’s commitment to promoting fair and equitable tax practices in Kano. He highlighted a policy brief presented to the commissioner, outlining the current tax regime’s strengths, weaknesses, and challenges. The brief included proposed short, medium, and long-term reforms for strengthening tax administration.
“We presented recommendations for policymakers to review and adopt, ultimately aiming to improve tax collection in the state,” Dr. Yahaya concluded.
Commissioner Shanono welcomed the initiative, recognizing the importance of revenue generation for government functionality.
He acknowledged the policy brief as a valuable contribution and pledged to present it to the State Executive Council for consideration.
He further encouraged future collaboration through the Ministry’s Director of Development Support Coordination.
In a related development, The TJ&GP delegation also visited the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi. Similar objectives of advocating for tax reforms and highlighting proposed solutions were presented.
Commissioner Dederi commended the TJ&GP’s efforts towards strengthening tax administration in Kano. He expressed his ministry’s support in shaping legal frameworks promoting responsible fiscal management, transparency, and equitable taxation.
Both commissioners received policy briefs outlining the current tax system and proposing reforms. The TJ&GP’s advocacy efforts underscore the importance of collaboration between civil society and government in achieving tax justice in Kano State.
