Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Kano Athletes Returning from Sports Festival

At least 20 athletes from the Kano State contingent lost their lives in a tragic motor accident on Saturday at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.

The athletes were returning from the National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the bridge and crashed.

Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, confirmed the incident. According to him, the bus was carrying 30 athletes at the time of the crash.

“As I am talking to you now, we have counted 19 dead bodies,” Fagge said, adding that several others sustained injuries and were receiving medical attention.

Ado Salisu, a former Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), said efforts were underway to evacuate the injured victims to the Kura General Hospital for treatment.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kano also confirmed the incident. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, stated that while the crash had been reported, details were still being compiled.

“We just received the report of the accident, so I cannot confirm the exact number of casualties at the moment,” Labaran said.
