TUP: Kano govt inaugurates 6-member verification committee

The Kano State Government has constituted a six-member committee to verify teachers that participated in the Teacher Upgraded Programme (TUP).

The Commissioner for Eeducation, Alhaji Umar Doguwa, who inaugurated the committee on Thursday in in Kano, said the development was sequel to the request by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

He said the union sought for the verification exercise to facilitate payment of outstanding balance of registration fees and other allowances for participants of the programme.

The committee, he said, was mandated to critically appraise the request by the union and made recommendations.

“Other terms of reference of the committee include to find out total number of the teachers who participated in the programme.

“To find out the names of the institutions responsible for the programme, and to come out with details information of the students in each institutions, among others,” he said.

The committee would be headed by Alhaji Tajuddeen Gambo, and five other members drawn from the Ministry of Education and the State Universal Education Board (SUBEB).

“I believe that this committee has the group of the right persons that are going to do what is required and make sure they come up with good result,” he said.

The TUP programme introduced by the former Gov. Rabi’u Kwankwaso’s administration seek to train unqualified teachers towards promoting professionalism in the profession.

It is being implemented in partnership between the state government and seven tertiary institutions.

Some 18,529 out of the 21,899 participants graduated since inception of the programme. (NAN)
