Turaki: PDP Ready To Correct Past Mistakes
By Hajara Abdullahi
The factional Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has said the party has awakened from its slumber and is ready to correct the past mistakes that plunged it into crisis.
Turaki made the remark during the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting on Wednesday in Abuja, adding that there is a huge task ahead for the new leadership.
“We have realised the mistakes we made, and we are ready to correct them—not only with our members but with all Nigerians,” he said.
He added that it is now time for members to embrace peace, pledging to prioritise reconciliation.
“One of the cardinal principles of this leadership is reconciliation. We believe there is no dispute or disagreement that cannot be resolved where there is a common objective and collective will to strengthen the party,” he added.
The Chairman emphasised the need for the PDP to return to the grassroots, where its strength lies.
“We have had our ups and downs. We fought ourselves and we fought each other. Some fought us from within and from without,” he said.
The Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, said the Ibadan convention which produced the Turaki-led National Working Committee is a testament to the party’s commitment to democracy, transparency, and constitutional order, emphasising the need for reconciliation and collective healing.
“As we celebrate progress, we must also embrace unity. This is a moment that calls for reconciliation and healing. I appeal to all aggrieved members at every level of the party to sheath their swords and return fully to the PDP family,” he said.
He added that from the early days of the new leadership, the signs are clear that the party is being repositioned, structures are being strengthened, and confidence is being restored across the federation.
“Nigerians today are confronted with unprecedented hardship, rising insecurity, economic uncertainty, and a loss of faith in governance under the APC-led government. At such a time, the PDP must not be divided; we must stand together as a united force, ready to rescue our nation,” he added.
Wabara urged members not to be deterred by recent defections, stressing that the PDP’s strength lies in its deep connection with the Nigerian people.
“The 2027 elections will not be about defections or propaganda,” he said. “They will be about the Nigerian people versus a failed government. And when that day comes, the PDP will stand firmly on the side of the people.”
The PDP, which serves as the major opposition party in the country, has recently faced setbacks due to internal crises and major defections, plunging it into a shadow of its past.
