Unapproved sugar from Brazil, India circulating in Nigeria, NAFDAC raises alarm

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted the public about the illicit importation of unapproved sugar from Brazil and India.

In a statement, NAFDAC disclosed that the unregistered sugar is not fortified with Vitamin A, noting that the safety and quality of the products are not guaranteed, thus making the product a health risk to consumers.

According to the statement, the products are imported through Cameroun (Douala), Niger, Chad and the Benin Republic into the Nigerian border communities of Borno, Adamawa, Lagos, Oyo and Ogun states.

“An estimated value of 200 trucks has been distributed within the Nigerian markets in communities that include Mubi, Gamboru’gala, Saki, Keshi, Badagry, and Idi-Iroko, and sold between N32,000 and N34,000 per bag,” The statement added.

NAFDAC implored importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale and consumption of the unregistered products.
