V-PeSDI Commends Kano Government’s Plan to Establish Modern Leatherwork Factory for Women
The Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative (V-PeSDI) has applauded the Kano State Government’s plan to establish modern shoe and leatherwork factory aimed at empowering women and strengthening small and medium-scale enterprises in the state.
V-PeSDI Coordinator, Hannatu Suleiman Abba, described the initiative as a significant step towards creating employment opportunities for women particularly single mothers, young girls, and divorcee in preserving the state’s renowned rich heritage in leather craftsmanship.
Hannatu commended the State Commissioner for Commerce and Investment, Hon. Shehu Wada Sagagi, for his dedication of uplifting Kano’s commercial status through the project during a courtesy visit.
She noted that the communities identified by Sagagi—renowned for their production of handmade shoes, bags, and other leather goods—have maintained this tradition for more than 300 years.
According to V-PeSDI, its engagement with the commissioner revealed that, the initiative aligns with the state’s development blueprint under Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, which places women’s empowerment and investment at the core of his administration’s for economic growth.
The planned factory will equip women with modern skills, advanced machinery, and the capacity to meet global production standards.
Hon. Sagagi reaffirmed that, following the governor’s directive, the factory will be established as soon as possible to boost the state’s economy and enhance opportunities for women.
