Varsity don stress the need for unifying Faith science to improve patient healing outcomes

From Tongnaan Bawa, Jos

Professor Abdul Jimmy Salaam of the University of Jos has described radiology as a unique medical specialty that combines science with faith to improve patient outcomes.

He made this assertion during the institution’s 113th inaugural lecture held at the university’s multipurpose auditorium in Jos.

Delivering the lecture titled “Seeing and Treating with the Eyes of Faith: The Perspective of a Radiologist”, Salaam, a specialist in General and Interventional Radiology, explained that the discipline demands precision, intuition, and confidence in interpreting what may not be immediately visible.

“For a radiologist, seeing with the eyes of faith means trusting training and subtle imaging cues—whether detecting an early tumour on a mammogram or a fracture on an X-ray,” he said, stressing that accurate diagnosis often relies on more than just visible symptoms.

On interventional radiology, he stated that it goes beyond diagnosis to treatment. “Faith takes on an active dimension here. Radiologists navigate catheters and ablate tumours using imaging without direct vision—trusting the process, technology, and their hands,” he explained.

Salaam maintained that radiology requires a careful balance between technology, medical knowledge, and belief in the invisible. “We must transform pixels on a screen into healing and hope,” he added, noting the profession’s growing relevance in modern medicine.

In his remarks, Vice Chancellor of the University, Tanko Ishaya, represented by Joash Amupitan, a professor and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), described inaugural lectures as a vital academic tradition. He commended the professor for his preparedness and for mentoring younger academics in the field.
