“We Hear You, But Let’s Talk for the Sake of Future Leaders,” Yobe Govt Tells ASU-YSU

From Sani Gazas Chinade, Damaturu

In a bid to address the recurring issue of industrial strikes at Yobe State University, the Yobe State Government has reached out to the university’s academic union with a message of empathy and dialogue, saying: “We hear you, but let’s talk for the sake of future leaders.”

In a statement signed by Alhassan Sule Mamudo, Chief Information Officer to the Head of Service, the government disclosed that the appeal was made during a crucial meeting between the State Head of Service, Alhaji Tonga Betara Bularafa, and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Yobe State University (ASU-YSU) as part of efforts to end the ongoing disruption.

Alhaji Bularafa urged the union to consider the long-term implications of repeated strike actions on students and the overall development of the state, calling for a shift from confrontation to collaboration.

“We are not against your demands; we recognize your rights. However, strike actions should not come at the expense of our children’s future. Let us engage in meaningful dialogue to move forward,” he said.

He further noted that Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration has already addressed some of the union’s concerns, including the implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage, and remains committed to resolving outstanding issues within the state’s financial capacity.

Responding, the Chairman of ASU-YSU, Comrade Ahmed Ibrahim Karage, expressed appreciation for the government’s approach and said the union was encouraged by the Head of Service’s explanations.

“We came seeking understanding, and we are glad to see the government is willing to listen and act. We are hopeful that this dialogue will lead to a resolution,” he stated.
