World Urbanism Day: KNUPDA Drums for Sustainable, Inclusive, Well-Planned Urban Growth in Kano

By Aisha Abubakar Mai Agogo

As the world marks World Urbanism Day, the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA) joins the global community in celebrating this important occasion dedicated to promoting sustainable urban development, efficient land use, and the creation of livable cities for all.

Sayyida Bahijja Malam Kabara, Public Relations Officer at KNUPDA, disclosed this in a statementtaissues to newsmen.

According to Bahijja, the day which is commemorated annually on November 8, serves as a reminder of the critical role urban planning plays in shaping the future of our cities, towns, and communities. It encourages collaboration among planners, government institutions, and citizens to build urban spaces that are inclusive, safe, resilient, and environmentally sustainable.

Speaking on the significance of the day, the Managing Director of KNUPDA, Arc. Hauwa Hassan Tudun-Wada, emphasized that the celebration provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in urban planning and to renew commitment toward ensuring that Kano develops in line with global best practices.

“Urban planning is not just about constructing buildings or expanding infrastructure; it is about creating balanced environments where people can live, work, and thrive. As a government agency, KNUPDA remains fully committed to promoting a well-coordinated, sustainable, and people-centered urban development agenda for Kano State,” she stated.

Arc. Hauwa Hassan Tudun-Wada highlighted that under the leadership of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the government has continued to prioritize urban renewal projects aimed at improving the living standards of residents, easing congestion, and enhancing the aesthetics of the city. She added that KNUPDA is working tirelessly to strengthen partnerships with local and international stakeholders to achieve these goals.

She further noted that urbanization comes with its challenges—ranging from housing deficits and waste management to traffic congestion and environmental degradation. However, she expressed optimism that with strategic planning, effective regulation, and active citizen participation, these challenges can be transformed into opportunities for economic growth and social inclusion.

“Kano State stands as one of Nigeria’s most dynamic and historic cities. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that as it continues to expand, we do so in a planned and sustainable manner—preserving our heritage while embracing modern development,” she added.

The Managing Director also called on professionals in the built environment—town planners, architects, engineers, surveyors, and developers—to uphold ethical standards and collaborate with KNUPDA in ensuring that all development activities align with approved planning regulations. She reaffirmed KNUPDA’s resolve to continue enforcing compliance with planning standards to safeguard public interest and promote orderly development across all local government areas of the state.

As the world celebrates World Urbanism Day, KNUPDA pledges to deepen its efforts in awareness creation, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable policy implementation to make Kano a model city where urban growth supports human welfare and environmental balance.
