World Youth Day: N-YED launches education support project for out-of-school youths

The Network for Youth Enlightenment and Development (N-YED) has launched an initiative to support out-of-school children, as part of activities to mark the 2025 World Youth Day.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of N-YED, Ambassador Abdulsalam Haruna, said the project known as the Student Per Philanthropist Initiative (SPPI) is designed to link children who cannot afford schooling with philanthropists willing to sponsor their education.

He said, “Youths are the backbone of every society, and today we are here to celebrate World Youth Day while encouraging them not to give up.

“One of the major causes of setbacks among young people is the lack of education. Through this project, we will engage philanthropists in different communities to adopt and sponsor out-of-school children and youths,” he said.

He added that the initiative was in line with the 2025 International Youth Day theme, “Local Youth Action for SDGs and Beyond.”

Also presenting highlights on the theme, Sadiq Muhammad Mustapha, Program Lead of Tax Justice, stressed that young people must take ownership of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He explained that the SDGs are global framework adopted by the United Nations to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all.

“The SDGs have 17 targets which address social, economic, and environmental challenges. The truth is, youths are not just beneficiaries of these goals but active agents of change,” he said.

“Today’s generation is the largest in history, with 1.8 billion young people worldwide. Youths are a force that must be acknowledged and involved in development. With our energy, creativity, and innovation, we are uniquely positioned to generate fresh ideas and practical solutions.”

According to him, while progress is being made, we have not yet reached our goals.

He emphasized that we can and must do better to achieve more before 2030.

Ambassador M.K. Adam, Executive Director of the Societal-Based Initiative for Rights, Peace and Development, encouraged young people to see themselves not as problems but as problem-solvers and solutions to the challenges facing society.

Some participants at the event also shared success stories of resilience and hard work, showing how young people are already contributing to community development.
