The Young Female Professionals in Media (YFPM) has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over a brutal attack on the household of Haruna Bashir in Dorayi Charanchi Quarters, Kano State, describing the incident as inhumane and a grave assault on society’s conscience.
In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Maryam Usman Nagado, and Secretary, Khadija Shehu Abdulkarim, the group said unknown hoodlums violently invaded the family’s residence, leaving Fatima Abubakar and her six children traumatised and emotionally distressed.
YFPM noted that the attack on a mother and her children within the supposed safety of their home goes beyond a criminal act, calling it a direct violation of human dignity and the fundamental right to security.
“As young women working in the media, we are particularly pained by this incident. A home should be a place of protection, not fear. No mother should be forced to watch her children subjected to terror, and no child should endure such psychological trauma and physical violence,” the statement said.
The group raised concerns over what it described as the growing boldness of criminal elements targeting defenceless households, warning that the trend poses serious threats to the safety of families, women and children across communities.
YFPM called on the Kano State Government, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to immediately conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the attack, insisting that those responsible must be identified, arrested and prosecuted in line with the law.
“Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done. Silence in moments like this only empowers violence. Accountability is necessary to restore public confidence and hope,” the statement added.
The organisation said it stands in solidarity with Fatima Abubakar and her children, urging government authorities, civil society groups, community leaders and members of the public to collectively demand justice, enhanced protection and stronger security measures to prevent a recurrence.
YFPM also reaffirmed its commitment to using its platforms and professional responsibility to amplify the voices of the vulnerable and advocate for a safer society.
“An attack on one family is an attack on us all,” the statement concluded.
