Yobe leaders forge alliance to shield schools from conflict’s impact

From Alhaji Yusuf, Damaturu

Save the Children International (SCI) convened a diverse coalition of government officials, security experts, and civil society members on Tuesday to mark the International Day to Protect Education from Attack (IDPEA).

Held under the global theme,”Securing Education, Safeguarding the Future,” the event in Damaturu served as a critical platform to address the urgent need to shield schools, students, and teachers from the devastating impact of conflict and violence.

The high-level gathering brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from the state education sector, security agencies, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), members of the Yobe State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, groups representing people living with disabilities (PLWDs),and other development partners.

In his remarks, the Yobe State Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Abba Idriss Adam, emphasized that education is the foundation of society and faces numerous threats, but with the right strategies, investments, and collective commitment, they can create safe learning environments for all students.

Represented by Abdullahi Yakubu,Adam looked forward to a productive discussion where experts and stakeholders would share insights and innovative solutions to achieve this goal.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Field Manager of the Save the Children Yobe State Office,Mr. Dennis Elisha, explained the significance of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, highlighting the fundamental right of every child to a safe education.

He revealed that education is a pathway to a brighter future but is under threat in conflict zones,a situation which robs children of their future and weakens society.

“SCI as an organization reaffirms its commitment to protecting education, but this goal requires a collective effort” said the SCI Field Manager for the Yobe office.

He called on all stakeholders, from government and military agencies to community leaders and parents, to join hands in protecting schools, teachers, and children.

The commemoration highlights a growing commitment in Yobe State to ensure that the right to education is upheld even in the face of security challenges, recognizing that protecting schools is fundamental to securing the future of the region.
