Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) and Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) joined forces to commemorate World Menstrual Hygiene Day by distributing sanitary pads to Tudun Maliki Special Education School, a institution dedicated to supporting pupils with disabilities.

This event marked YOSPIS’ annual initiative aimed at fostering a period-friendly environment for girls, with a particular emphasis on those with disabilities.

YOSPIS Executive Director, Zainab Nasir Ahmad, highlighted the significance of the collaboration with NAWOJ, noting that it enabled a comprehensive approach to addressing period poverty and promoting menstrual hygiene awareness through media outreach and community engagement.

Ahmad emphasized YOSPIS’ dedication to supporting vulnerable girls in Kano State, ensuring they have access to essential menstrual products.

NAWOJ Chairperson, Hafsat Usman, underscored the importance of menstrual education, citing numerous reports of diseases linked to improper hygiene.

Usman urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to create a supportive environment for their children, allowing them to navigate menstruation with dignity and reducing the risk of period stigma, abuse, and harmful incidents.

Halima Muhammad, a visually impaired student at the school, expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the prompt intervention, stressing the urgent need for menstrual products among girls with disabilities.

She noted that this support enables them to focus on their studies in a conducive environment, free from the anxiety and discomfort associated with menstruation.
