In observance of Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS), in partnership with the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), sensitized and distributed sanitary pads to Tudun Maliki Special Education School.

This initiative is part of YOSPIS’s annual intervention at the school, aiming to create a period-friendly environment for girls, especially those with disabilities.

Zainab Nasir Ahmad, Executive Director of YOSPIS, highlighted the collaborative effort to address period hygiene and poverty through media advocacy, with NAWOJ providing a strong voice from the media perspective.

YOSPIS’s focus on social issues has led to ongoing distribution of sanitary pads to vulnerable girls in Kano State, yielding significant impact.

Hafsat Usman, Chairperson of NAWOJ, emphasized the importance of providing basic knowledge on menstrual hygiene to girls, particularly during puberty, to mitigate health risks associated with improper hygiene.

Usman urged parents to foster an open and supportive environment for their children to reduce period stigmatization, abuse, and other harmful societal issues.

Halima Muhammad, a visually impaired student, expressed gratitude for the timely intervention by YOSPIS and NAWOJ, stressing the urgent need for sanitary supplies for all girls with disabilities in the school.

She further noted that this support would contribute to creating a quality and conducive learning environment, enabling students to focus on their studies.
