Zaria LG Chair Inspects Flood Areas, Engage Communities

The Executive Chairman of Zaria Local Government Council, Engr. Jamil Ahmad Muhammad Jaga, yesterday, actively joined in the initial rescue and evacuation efforts following the devastating flood that struck several parts of Zaria.

“It was heartbreaking to see families displaced and properties damaged,” the Chairman remarked. “But it was also inspiring to witness the resilience of our people and the dedication of those who rushed out to help.”

Ishaq Galadima, Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman disclosed this in a statement issued to PRIME TIME NEWS today.

According to Ishaq, later in the day, the Chairman led an inspection tour in collaboration with officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA ) and the RED CROSS Society Zaria Division. The team assessed the extent of the damage, listened to the concerns of affected residents, and discussed both immediate relief and long-term interventions.

The inspection covered the following areas in Tukur-Tukur Ward: Kwarin Dangoma, Garejin Baba Kaduna Bridge, Kamacha/Yan Kwanoni, and Sabuwar Unguwar Magume / Layin Bako Zuntu Bridge.

The team also visited Kofar Kuyanbana in Unguwar Juma Ward, Zaria City, where the Chairman directly interacted with residents. He assured them of the Council’s commitment to sustaining collaboration with emergency management agencies to deliver relief and work toward permanent solutions.

Addressing the root causes of the recurring floods, Engr. Jaga emphasized:
“Beyond the heavy rainfall, we must face the truth about what worsens this problem. Refuse dumped in drainages and the erection of structures along waterways are major contributors. For nearly 20 years, these practices have obstructed natural water flow, and unless we act decisively, the situation will persist.”

The Chairman further pledged to liaise with the Kaduna State Government, the Office of the Speaker, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Ecological Fund Office to pursue lasting and sustainable solutions.

In the afternoon, Engr. Jaga attended the funeral prayers of two distinguished sons of Zazzau—Wamban Dawakin Zazzau, Alhaji Aminu Iya Pate, and Alhaji Usman Dalhatu—at the Emir’s Palace. He prayed:
“May Allah (SWT) forgive their shortcomings, reward their good deeds, and grant them Aljannatul Firdaus. Ameen.”

The Chairman concluded by calling on residents to take personal responsibility in flood prevention. “I appeal to our people to cooperate with authorities and keep our drainages clean. Together, we can build a safer, stronger, and more resilient Zaria.”
