10 Dead, 8 Injured in Nigeria’s church Foods Distribution Stampede

A stampede during a food distribution event at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama in Nigeria’s Capital city of Abuja, on Saturday morning claimed the lives of ten people, including four children, and left eight others injured.

The tragic incident occurred around 6:30 a.m (8.30 GMT), as a crowd gathered for food items meant for vulnerable and elderly individuals. Four of the injured have since been treated and discharged, while the others remain under medical care.

Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory confirmed the incident.

In a statement issued by the spokesman of Police, Josephine Adeh, the Command emphasized the importance of notifying law enforcement ahead of public events or charitable activities to ensure adequate security measures are in place and avoid similar tragedies.

“Organizers of large gatherings must comply with this directive to prevent loss of lives. Negligence will result in legal consequences,” the statement read.

The Police encouraged public cooperation in adhering to safety measures and urged residents to report emergencies through the FCT Control Room at 0803 200 3913 or 0806 032 1234.

This tragic incident occurred few days after 35 children died in a funfair in Ibadan, Oyo state of South West Nigeria.
