Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Senator representing Kano South,Abdul’Rahman Kawu Sumaila,
has decried the use of thuggery and illicit drugs in electioneering campaigns, saying the practice does not augur well for democracy and the nation.
Senator Sumaila made the remarks on Sunday while presenting his Scorecard to the media at a Forum organized by the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ) in partnership with the Office of the distinguished Senator.
The Event was tagged:”One-On-One With Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila,OFR,PhD: Reviewing The 2023 Kano South Campaign Promises Ahead of 2027.”
He stated that he would not indulge in the use of weapons and encouraging drug abuse during his political activities, unlike some other politicians.
The lawmaker said he believes his constituents would vote for him for a second term in the Senate based on his current performance, describing the use of thuggery as inimical to democracy.
He also advised the electorate to vote for candidates that have the capacity to deliver dividends of democracy to them, and not based on their appearance.
“Vote for capacity, and not by appearance of candidates.Vote for candidates that have the capacity to improve your lots in terms of projects execution and other dividends of democracy,” Sumaila said.
He then urged the people of Kano South Senatorial District to vote for him for a second term during the forthcoming national assembly elections to enable him to consolidate on the giant strides he had recorded in the zone in the last three years.
He highlighted such achievements to include the execution of 103 projects and interventions across the senatorial zone.
They are: the sinking of 6,090 tube wells on farmers’ own plots across the 16 local government areas of the zone, and the revival of three dams at Tiga,Challawa and Kafin Chiri.
Others, the lawmaker said, include the award of scholarships to 1,082 students studying in various institutions of higher learning under the Waraka Initiative, and the empowerment of traders, artisans, women and farmers with tools, vehicles, sewing machines and cash.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, Alhaji Murtala Adewale, in his address, said the event was “specifically designed to exercise that constitutional responsibility by holding the distinguished Senator, Abdulrahman Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila, accountable for his stewardship.”
Adewale said Section 22 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), places a responsibility on the mass media to uphold government accountable to the people.
“How far has he fulfilled the promises he made in 2023? What has he achieved for the people of Kano South during his first three years in the National Assembly?
“And why should the good people of Kano South consider entrusting him with another term based on his legislative experience and contributions in the Red Chamber, in the 2027 elections, Insha Allah?,” he said.
He thanked Senator Kawu Sumaila for accepting to account for his stewardship, and hoped that other elected political office holders will “borrow a leaf from this humble man of the people.”
