Adamawa Senator Launches Tree Planting Campaign in Mayo-Belwa

From Umar Dankano, Yola

Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe, representing Adamawa Southern Senatorial district, has launched a tree planting campaign in Mayo-Belwa local government area to promote afforestation and combat climate change.

The event, held at the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN) Mayo-Belwa Diocese Secretariat, aims to raise awareness about the importance of tree planting in mitigating the effects of climate change.

Senator Yaroe emphasized that tree planting has become a necessity to save the earth from the devastating impacts of climate change, which is threatening the survival of many regions of the world.

He noted that human activities such as cutting down trees, emitting poisonous gases into the atmosphere, indiscriminate dumping of industrial waste and effluent, and the use of harmful chemicals like roundup herbicide, have contributed significantly to the climate change challenge.

“We build factories and operate equipment that contribute carbon emissions in volumes into the atmosphere without thought of the damage which is being caused to the environment.

We cut down trees wantonly without provision for replanting, laying bare the earth surface with the attendant challenges of erosion and desertification.

We pollute the earth by producing and using plastic materials and strewing them randomly all over the place without thoughts for recycling these wastes as is obtainable in other climes,” Senator Yaroe said.

The senator acknowledged that Israel and the United Arab Emirates have proven that with concerted efforts like tree planting, it is possible to transform deserts into lush green environments.

He urged everyone to adopt the culture of tree planting to enrich their communities and tackle desertification.

Senator Yaroe commended the Iliya Yame Foundation for initiating the tree planting campaign across the 21 local government areas in Adamawa State.

He applauded the foundation’s efforts in conducting tree planting exercises in Michika, Demsa, and Mayo-Belwa local government areas over the years.
