Adamawa Women Acknowledge Training on GBV, Gender Equality

From Umar Dankano, Yola

Women in Adamawa State have acknowledged the impact of a sensitization programme aimed at improving awareness of women’s rights and gender equality through conflict-sensitive approaches. T

he initiative was undertaken by Oxfam, GIZ, and the German Cooperation, co-funded by the European Union (EU).

The 18-month programme, codenamed Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (WoRGE) Project, was conducted in Michika and Guyuk Local Government Areas. It focused on training women’s groups on gender-based violence and addressing rights denied due to cultural and religious norms.

During a closeout event in Yola on Monday, community representatives from Michika and Guyuk, Mrs. Regina Elson and Mrs. Rose Russia, noted that the programme contributed to increasing awareness among women about their rights and responsibilities.

They said cultural and religious practices had previously limited such understanding but that the initiative had begun to address those barriers.

In his address at the event, Oxfam Country Director Daniel Mccormick noted that the project began in December 2023 as part of BMZ’s programme on the social and economic participation of returnees.

He acknowledged the support of partner organizations including GIZ, CRUDAN, CEPAD, and the EU.

The WoRGE Project included training sessions, mentorship activities, and community platforms that facilitated discussions around women’s issues.

According to the organizers, the initiative also contributed to the creation of 13 safe spaces for women and an increase in the number of women participating in local leadership structures.

As part of the outcomes, three women and three persons with disabilities were reportedly included in traditional councils following advocacy efforts and leadership training sessions.

Stakeholders indicated that the project supported collaboration at both local and state levels aimed at promoting gender-inclusive governance.
