AI, Technology Must Be Inclusive to Deepen Democracy, Says YZ Ya’u

The Executive Director of the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), Engr. YZ Ya’u, has called for the inclusive use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies to strengthen democratic participation and governance in Nigeria.

Engr. Ya’u made the call while delivering the keynote address at the inaugural Dr. Kole Shettima Innovation in Democracy Challenge, organised by Spotlight NG in Damaturu.

Speaking on the theme “Leveraging AI and Technology to Advance Democracy,” the CITAD Executive Director emphasized that technology must work for everyone, regardless of physical ability or disability. He stressed that digital tools should be intentionally designed to ensure inclusion, access, and equal participation in democratic processes.

According to him, technology plays a critical role in democracy by expanding citizens’ rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and civic engagement. He noted that traditional and social media platforms now provide avenues for citizens to share their views, engage leaders, challenge policies, and participate in public discourse.

“Through the media and social media platforms, citizens are not only able to express their ideas but also engage leaders directly and hold them accountable. Technology has also expanded our right to assemble, now extending it to online spaces,” he said.

Engr. Ya’u further outlined four key pillars required to fully harness technology for democratic development: awareness, availability, accountability, and affordability. He explained that citizens must be aware of their digital rights, have access to digital tools, be protected by accountable systems, and be able to afford technology without exclusion.

He urged policymakers, civil society organisations, and technology developers to prioritise inclusive digital governance frameworks that strengthen democratic values and ensure no one is left behind.

The Dr. Kole Shettima Innovation in Democracy Challenge is an initiative designed to identify, support, and scale youth-led innovations that strengthen democracy, accountability, and civic participation across Nigeria and West Africa.
