BREAKING: DPO, One Other Killed in Rano LGA Unrest as Kano Police Launch Investigation
Tragedy struck in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State following a violent incident that led to the deaths of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and a detained suspect. The Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday, May 26.
According to the statement, the trouble began on the evening of Sunday, May 25, at about 8:15 pm, when a motorcycle mechanic, identified as Abdullahi Musa, was arrested after several complaints from the public alleged he was riding recklessly, reportedly under the influence of substances. While in custody, Musa became weak and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he died the following morning while receiving treatment.
News of the death triggered chaos, as hoodlums launched an attack on the Rano Police Division. The attackers reportedly looted the station, set parts of it and two vehicles on fire, and vandalized ten additional vehicles. During the attack, the DPO sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he later died.
In response to the unrest, the police arrested 27 suspects allegedly connected to the violence. Authorities have since restored order in the area.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, PhD, visited the scene of the incident and paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Rano, His Highness Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19). The Commissioner also directed a thorough and transparent investigation into the root causes of the incident.
While expressing condolences to the family of the fallen DPO, the Command appealed to the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without interference.
Police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the state and called on citizens to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities during the investigation.
