BREAKING: Supreme Court Nullifies Rivers Local Government Election

The Supreme Court has invalidated the local government election conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on October 5, 2024.

In a ruling delivered by Justice Jamilu Tukur, the court held that the election violated key provisions of the Electoral Act, rendering the process unlawful.

Justice Tukur, while reading the judgment, declared that RSIEC’s actions were null and void due to its failure to comply substantially with the Electoral Act and its guidelines. Specifically, the court faulted the commission for continuing voter registration after the election date had already been announced.

The court further ruled that the processes leading to the election contravened Section 150 of the Electoral Act, thereby invalidating the entire exercise.
