The Community Health and Research Initiative (CHR) has called on the Kano State Government to urgently inaugurate the State Child Protection Law Implementation Committee to ensure the effective enforcement of the Kano State Child Protection Law, 2023.
In a statement signed by Nafisa Shehu Ibrahim, Executive Administrator of the Community Health and Research Initiative (CHR) and issued on Thursday, said the law provides a comprehensive framework for promoting the safety, development, and overall wellbeing of children, outlining clear roles and responsibilities for relevant actors while strengthening coordinated efforts to prevent abuse and respond to child protection cases.
The organisation noted that since the passage of the law, the state government, particularly through the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, has undertaken a series of sensitisation and awareness campaigns across communities.
According to CHR, the initiatives have successfully engaged community members, traditional leaders, civil society organisations, and other key stakeholders, thereby enhancing public understanding of the law and its importance.
However, the organization expressed concern that the absence of an inaugurated implementation committee continues to hinder the full operationalisation of the law.
CHR stressed that setting up the committee would improve coordination among ministries, departments, and agencies, while also providing a structured platform for collaboration with civil society and community-based actors.
“This step is critical to ensuring that the provisions of the law are translated into practical and sustainable outcomes for children,” the statement said.
The organisation reaffirmed that child health and wellbeing remain central to its mandate, adding that it is committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen child protection systems in Kano State.
