The Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) has called for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the implementation of the Kano State Climate Change Policy.
The call was made on Thursday during a policy review session on climate change policies and other frameworks organised by DPI and funded by the Disability Rights Fund (DRF) in Kano.
Speaking at the session, the Technical Adviser to DPI, Barr. Nura Ahmad Muhammad, said the meeting was aimed at reviewing the Kano State Climate Change Policy and identifying gaps affecting persons with disabilities.
He said the organisation identified areas requiring attention, particularly the need to adequately reflect the concerns of persons with disabilities in climate action and policy implementation.
According to him, the session brought together stakeholders to make recommendations that would help bridge the identified gaps and ensure disability concerns are mainstreamed into the policy.
“We are going to use the recommendations to develop our input, which is going to be mainstreamed in the policy so that all those gaps identified will be bridged,” Muhammad said.
He added that DPI would develop a policy brief and advocacy points based on the outcome of the review, which would be presented to relevant stakeholders, particularly the Kano State Ministry of Environment.
Muhammad said the ministry, as the custodian of the policy, would be engaged with the recommendations from the session to encourage their consideration in the ongoing policy review.
