A Kano-based non-governmental organization, Disability Projects Initiative, has organized a two-day capacity building training on climate change mitigation and adaptation for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Kano State.
The training, held from May 6 to 7, 2026, at Atlas Training and Development Institute, was aimed at equipping PWDs with knowledge and practical skills to address climate-related hazards and their impacts.
The programme focused on enhancing participants’ understanding of climate hazards and their effects on persons with disabilities, while also promoting personal adaptation and mitigation measures as well as policy advocacy for disability-inclusive climate action.
The training was organized by Disability Projects Initiative with support from Disability Rights Fund.
Participants at the training were drawn from different disability clusters including persons with physical disabilities, visual impairment, hearing impairment, persons with albinism and others.
Speaking during the training, the Executive Director of DPI, Abubakar Nura Yusuf, described the initiative as unique, noting that it specifically targeted PWDs to deepen their understanding of the impacts of climate hazards such as flooding, drought, desertification and extreme heat.
According to him, the training would also help participants understand how climate-related challenges affect livelihoods, health, education, food security and sustainable development, while exposing them to practical measures to tackle such challenges.
Also speaking, the Programme Officer of DPI, Saifullahi Mukhtar Sadiq, disclosed that a comprehensive training manual was developed to enhance learning and understanding among participants.
He explained that the manual contains 13 modules covering critical topics including disability inclusion, climate-related hazards, mitigation and adaptation strategies, as well as self-care during climate emergencies.
In his remarks, Technical Adviser to DPI, Barr. Nura Ahmad Muhammad, appreciated stakeholders who contributed to the success of the programme and commended Disability Rights Fund for supporting the project.
The training featured presentations from resource persons including Dr. Auwal Inuwa Bello of Bayero University Kano and Dr. Ali Aminu Jingau of Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education Kano.
Participants at the event commended DPI and the Disability Rights Fund for organizing the training, noting that the knowledge acquired would help reduce their vulnerability to climate-related hazards.
DPI is currently implementing a project aimed at empowering persons with disabilities on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in Kano and across Northern Nigeria.
