The Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), through its Muslim Opinion Leaders (MOLs) for the Prevention of Gender-Based Violence, is partnering with the Women’s Organization for Relief and Empowerment (WORE) to tackle the increasing cases of domestic violence and sexual harassment in Kano State. This initiative is supported by the Ford Foundation.
The Founder of WORE, Her Royal Highness (HRH) Hajiya Maryam Sanusi, Wife of the Emir of Kano, expressed deep concern over the rise in gender-based violence in the state. She described the trend as alarming and contrary to the socio-cultural and religious values of Kano State.
According to her, there is an urgent need for research and intervention programs to address the growing cases of domestic violence, sexual harassment, and other forms of gender-based violence.
As part of this collaboration, the initiative will engage religious leaders, particularly during the upcoming Ramadan period, to incorporate messages on the Islamic perspective on gender-based violence into tafseer and other religious sessions.
Additionally, traditional leaders will be involved in sensitization efforts to enhance their understanding of Islam’s stance on gender-based violence and strengthen their role in raising community awareness and facilitating a proactive response.
Speaking on the initiative, Hajiya Maryam emphasized the importance of working closely with religious and traditional leaders to ensure a comprehensive approach to combating gender-based violence in Kano.
The partnership dialogue brought together key experts known for their extensive experience in addressing societal issues, including Prof. Aisha Abdu Ismail, Barr. Aisha Tijjani, Dr. Maryam Nasir Aliyu, and Dr. Taufiq Abubakar Hussaini.
