Empowering Change: North-East Grantees Convene in Yobe to Strengthen Governance

From Alhaji Yusuf, Damaturu

The Grantees of the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF) from across the North-East region have convened for a two-day capacity-building workshop focused on system strengthening and effective project management.

The workshop, organized by the Spotlight for Transparency and Accountability, a catalyst grantee for the NYFF 2025 fund, brought together thirteen awardees.

This includes six organizations and seven individuals who received development and individual grants to advance their work in critical areas like governance, peace and security, health, and education.

Muazu Alhaji Modu, Chief Executive of Spotlight for Transparency and Accountability, explained the workshop’s objective that at the end of the training, the grantees will be able to put in place systems and structures to effectively manage their grants and sustain the work they are doing in their states.

He added that for individual grantees, the training is a stepping stone to potentially start their own organizations and deepen civic participation.

“As a catalyst grantee, our mandate is to provide leadership and support for the development grantees and individual grantees across the North-East region,”Modu added, emphasizing the role of fostering sustainable civic engagement.

On her part,Asma’u Ahmad Yaro,an advisory board member with the NYFF, stressed the importance of training for achieving a common goal.

“We all are working towards a common goal a better Nigeria, or as we like to call it, ‘the Nigeria we want’.

She advised the participants, urging them to move beyond theory to practice. “My advice is that it’s not only about coming to sit down and write notes; it’s about listening and actually putting those learnings into practice.

The Nigeria Youth Futures Fund is a significant initiative implemented by LEAP Africa and funded by the Macarthur Foundation, Ford Foundation and luminate .it was established in the wake of the 2020 EndSARS protests, born from the observation that Nigerian youth, who demonstrated a capacity to mobilize without a central leader, could significantly strengthen the country’s governance landscape if provided with resources and capacity building.
