Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to the State of Qatar, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, officially presented his Letters of Credence to the Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
The formal ceremony, held at the Amiri Diwan in Doha, was conducted with full diplomatic honours, including an inspection of the Guard of Honour by the Nigerian envoy.
Following the presentation, Ambassador Yakubu held a private audience with the Amir, during which they exchanged assurances of deepened bilateral relations.
The Amir recalled previous high-level diplomatic exchanges between Abuja and Doha, emphasizing Qatar’s commitment to expanding economic and strategic cooperation with Nigeria.
Ambassador Yakubu extended the warm greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Amir and the people of Qatar, reiterating Nigeria’s alignment with strengthening long-standing ties.
The Ambassador also conveyed Nigeria’s condolences to the Gulf nation over a recent industrial accident at the Ras Laffan Industrial City, while highlighting the critical need to bolster partnerships in trade, investment, energy, education, security, and humanitarian affairs.
Strategic Economic Mandate
Foreign policy analysts view Yakubu’s deployment to Doha as a strategic play by the Tinubu administration to attract major sovereign investments and align energy policies.
Qatar, a global powerhouse in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), holds pivotal expertise that Nigeria aims to leverage under its ongoing “Decade of Gas” initiative.
The significance of his assignment was underscored just two weeks ago when Yakubu arrived at Hamad International Airport to assume office.
He was received not only by Qatar’s Protocol Director, Ambassador Ibrahim Abdullah Fakhro, and a coalition of 13 African ambassadors, but also by Dr. Philip Mshelbila, the Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).
With the Qatar Investment Authority managing assets exceeding $500 billion, Yakubu’s primary diplomatic ledger is expected to focus on channeling Qatari foreign direct investment into Nigerian agriculture, aviation, real estate, and digital infrastructure, while strengthening consular support for the growing population of Nigerian professionals in the Gulf region.
