Fuel subsidy: Gov. Yusuf distributes food items to vulnerable groups as palliative

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Monday distributed the second batch of food items to vulnerable groups in the state as a palliative measure to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy.

The governor disclosed this at the distribution ceremony at Coronation Hall, Government House.

He said 52,800 bags of 10kg rice and 52,800 bags of 10kg maize were distributed to 484 wards in the state, with each ward receiving 400 bags of rice and 400 bags of maize.

In addition to the ward distribution, the governor also said that the following categories of beneficiaries would receive their shares of the palliatives materials:

Tsangaya and Islamiyya Schools, Social and Rehabilitation Homes, Patients in Specialist Hospitals, Persons with special Need across 44 Local Governments and Civil Servants from Level 1 to Level 6.

Others are widows and orphans from Kano Commands of Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air force, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Police Department of State Services ,Nigerian Immigration Services, Nigerian Customs Services, Nigerian Correctional Services, NDLEA, Nigerian Civil Defense Corps, Nigerian Peace Corps, KAROTA Kano Vigilante, VIOsand Askarawan Kwankwasiyya.

The governor also announced that the state government would soon commence empowerment programmes for 5,000 women, 5,000 youths, and 5,000 persons with special needs from across the 484 wards every month.

He also said that the state government would intervene in the transportation sector by distributing AMANA taxis and buses, and by launching KANAWA Mass Transit Buses and Girls Child Buses at a subsidized rate.

Finally, the governor urged the beneficiaries of the food items to make judicious use of them.

“I urge the beneficiaries of today’s distribution to take full advantage of government’s good gesture by making judicious use of what we have given to them,” the governor said.

Recall that the governor flagged off the first batch of palliatives materials and agricultural empowerment to farmers, women, and the vulnerable last month.
