Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation HADIN KAI have confirmed that the explosion which occurred at a mosque in Gamboru Market on Wednesday night, resulting in the death of two civilians and injuries to 32 others, was caused by a suicide bomber.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Operation HADIN KAI Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Uba Sani.
According to him, preliminary findings indicated that the incident was triggered by a suspected Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device (IED), killing himself and two civilians on the scene.
“Troops, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, other sister security agencies, the Borno State Government, and NEMA, responded promptly, secured, and cordoned off the affected area to prevent further harm and ensure public safety. Casualties were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for prompt medical attention,” he said.
He added that a total of 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries, and two of the injured persons were later confirmed dead at the hospital, while two others remain in critical condition. The remaining victims are stable and receiving appropriate medical care.
“Troops and other security agencies have since intensified surveillance and security measures within Maiduguri and surrounding areas,” he added.
The Army officer further urged members of the public to avoid crowded places, particularly churches, and to maintain heightened vigilance during the yuletide season. He also advised citizens to report teenagers or individuals with suspicious appearances to security operatives.
“Citizens are urged to promptly report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest security post,” he said.
Lieutenant Colonel Sani extended condolences to the families of the victims, reaffirming the commitment of Operation HADIN KAI to the protection of lives and property.
“OPHK commiserates with the families of the deceased and assures the public of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property,” he concluded.
