Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Fulfills Life-Changing Promise to Disabled Law Graduate

By Salisu Hamisu Ali

A heartwarming story of hope and humanity unfolded in Kano after a young woman battling a rare muscle disorder received life-changing support—directly from the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Ummi, 31, has lived with proximal myopathy, a debilitating and progressive muscle condition, for over 18 years. The illness gradually stripped her of physical strength, ultimately affecting her mobility and daily life. Yet, despite the odds, Ummi pursued her education and earned a law degree. However, her deteriorating health made it impossible for her to continue to Law School.

In a moment of courage and perhaps desperation, Ummi sent a text message to Governor Yusuf, sharing her story and asking for help. To her astonishment, the Governor not only read the message—he acted on it.

Governor Yusuf immediately commissioned a personal investigation into her case. Upon confirming her diagnosis, he pledged to cover all her medical needs, including therapy equipment, mobility aids, and ongoing care—an intervention worth millions of Naira.

But the Governor’s gesture didn’t stop there.

In a touching ceremony that left many in tears, Ummi was invited to meet Governor Yusuf in person. Visibly emotional, she expressed her gratitude as the Governor warmly declared her “a daughter,” promising his personal support and giving her direct access to him through text. He also introduced her to his own daughter, a fellow Law student, to encourage and mentor her.

Beyond the personal gestures, Governor Yusuf also extended support to Ummi’s caregiver, Amina, placing her on the Government House’s payroll. He further provided food assistance and promised a memorable Sallah celebration for Ummi’s family.

“This is life,” Governor Yusuf told Ummi. “Every soul has its test, its path, its destiny. But what matters is hope—and the people who help you carry on.”

The story, shared by Dr. Atiku Gandu, has quickly become a symbol of compassionate leadership, earning praise across the state and beyond. Citizens have hailed Governor Yusuf as not only a political leader but also a true humanitarian.

In a time when many public officials are seen as distant from the people, Governor Yusuf’s actions serve as a powerful reminder that leadership can—and should—be rooted in empathy.

As Dr. Gandu put it, “May history remember this day. May it remember Abba K Yusuf — the People’s Governor, the Father to the Forgotten, the Hope of a New Nigeria.”
