Illegal Mining:Bincike International Issues Urgent National Call To Action

Bincike International has issued an urgent national call to action addressing the systemic plunder, environmental destruction, and human rights abuses fueled by unregulated illegal mining across Nigeria.
The group said in a statement that while the nation sits on a vast fortune of critical minerals essential for the global energy transition, a shadowy and unregulated economy continues to siphon off this natural heritage.
“This illicit trade starves federal and state treasuries of vital revenues, devastates fragile ecosystems, and subjects vulnerable citizens in host communities to severe exploitation.
“To fully grasp the magnitude of what Nigeria is losing, one must look at global geological benchmarks. Globally, a hard-rock lithium deposit containing just 0.4% Lithium Oxide (\text{Li}_2\text{O}) is considered commercially viable, with most international deposits averaging between 1% and 2%,” it said in statement which was signed by Era lVangawa Bolgent CEO | Multimedia Journalist.
According to the release,Nigeria, however, sits on a remarkable global anomaly—deposits in Nasarawa State average an extraordinary 3.5% \text{Li}_2\text{O}, with peak samples testing as high as 13%.
“Yet, while state governments work to establish local processing infrastructure to capture value internally, organized illegal cartels continue to strip-mine the soil and bypass legal channels. Billions of dollars in high-grade critical minerals are smuggled across borders annually, returning zero tax revenue or royalties to the public treasury or host communities.
“Beyond the loss of public revenue, this illicit extraction causes irreversible damage to Nigeria’s protected areas and rich biodiversity reserves. Illegal mining operations have encroached directly into pristine ecological sanctuaries, including Cross River National Park, Gashaka Gumti National Park—Nigeria’s largest national park—and several other protected conservation sites.
“In clear violation of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act of 2007 and the National Park Service Act of 2006, illicit cartels, sometimes operating under improperly issued or illicitly acquired licenses, are strip-mining protected landscapes.
“These activities threaten globally significant ecosystems, endangering critically vulnerable species such as the Cross River gorilla, forest elephants, and chimpanzees, while accelerating deforestation, soil erosion, and heavy metal contamination of critical river systems.
“Furthermore, park rangers tasked with defending these sanctuaries face escalating violence from armed mining syndicates, compromising national conservation efforts and rural security.
“This ongoing plunder leaves behind a trail of severe socio-economic and human devastation.
“Unregulated practices permanently destroy agricultural lands and contaminate local water supplies, stripping rural populations of their traditional livelihoods. Worse still is the human toll: illicit mining corridors operate in complete defiance of fundamental human rights, subjecting laborers to life-threatening conditions without safety gear, exploiting child labor, and directly fueling broader rural insecurity and armed conflict across affected regions. Human dignity is systematically traded for cheap ore while illicit networks profit.
“To combat this national emergency, Bincike International urges immediate, coordinated intervention across all tiers of government. Restoring integrity to Nigeria’s mineral sector requires enforcing strict revenue transparency through independent audits and public tracking of all extraction channels to ensure royalties reach public funds. Environmental justice must be served by revoking all illegal permits issued within protected reserves, prosecuting illegal syndicates, holding corporate facilitators accountable, and mandating comprehensive land remediation. Additionally, human rights and environmental protections must be rigorously enforced to eradicate child labor, protect park rangers, and sever the links between illicit mining, deforestation, and regional insecurity. Host communities must also be formally integrated as empowered legal stakeholders and co-guardians of protected lands.
“Nigeria’s mineral wealth belongs to its people and its future, and it must no longer be allowed to enrich illegal networks at the cost of our national parks, environment, economy, and human lives. Citizens, civil society organizations, government agencies, and international partners are called upon to join this vital advocacy campaign, demand policy enforcement, and actively participate in safeguarding the nation’s natural resources and protected heritage,” the statement added.
