Residents of Kiyawa town in Jigawa State have called for urgent action to address the lack of functional street lights, emphasizing their importance in enhancing security and public safety.
In an open letter addressed to the Chairman of Kiyawa Local Government and signed by Comrade Lawan B. Ahmad on behalf of the community, the residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the poor state of street lighting in the town.
They noted that most of the street lights are either non-functional or emit dim light, creating a haven for criminals and putting the safety of residents at risk.
The letter stressed that the inadequate lighting has led to a rise in crime, including theft, robbery, and assault, as the darkness provides cover for criminal activities.
Additionally, poor visibility at night increases the likelihood of accidents, especially for pedestrians and cyclists, while promoting fear and insecurity among residents.
The situation has significantly impacted the quality of life and business activities in the area.
The residents urged the local government to conduct a thorough inspection and repair of all faulty street lights, replace outdated lights with durable alternatives, and install additional lighting in poorly covered areas.
They also called for a more efficient maintenance program to ensure the sustainability of the lighting system.
The letter concluded by emphasizing that investing in street lighting is essential for the safety, security, and well-being of the people of Kiyawa town.
The community expressed hope that the local government would respond promptly to their concerns and take decisive steps to resolve the issue.
