The Pro-Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano, Professor Hafiz Abubakar has pledged total support to the University’s athletes aimed at making an impact in the upcoming Nigerian University Games Association NUGA in Calabar, the Cross River state capital.
Professor Hafiz Abubakar made the pledge during the opening ceremony of the maiden edition of Inter Union Staff football competition held at the University’s Main campus.
He said that organizing regular tournament among staff and athletes will go along way in promoting and developing various sporting events within the University.
The Pro- Chancellor further explained that as upcoming Nigerian University Games Association NUGA is approaching, all hands must be on deck to recruit hidden talented and skillful players with a view to actualise the set target.
According to him, the University management led by Professor Amina Salihi Bayero will continue to do everything possible especially in providing conducive atmosphere for the athletes towards the success of the institution.
Professor Hafiz Abubakar who is the former deputy governor of Kano state described sports as a major factor that apart from uniting various communities, but it also projecting and promoting the image of particular University, state or the country.
Pro- Chancellor, however, called on the sports directory to map out strategy and prepare well ahead of the NUGA games scheduled to hold in November, this year.
” With calibre of athletes in the University coupled with their commitment and determination, the sky will be their limit.
While expressing satisfaction with the sports directory for their dedication and commitment, he urged the stakeholders to rally round and redouble their efforts in order to continue projecting the good image of the institution as far as sports is concerned in the state and the country at large.
In the match played, Academic Staff Union of University ASUU defeated it’s National Academic Association of Technology NAAT counterpart by 2-1.
The matches continue today Tuesday while the final will hold on Monday, 27, 2026 where the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Amina Salihi Bayero is expected to be the special guests of honour at the occasion.
