The Kano Concerned Citizens have issued a statement addressing accusations against the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin.
The group responded to allegations, particularly those raised by Senator Ali Ndume, in connection with the tax reform bill debate in the Senate.
According to the statement, Senator Barau’s role in the plenary was procedural. As the presiding officer, he presented a document from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) concerning the tax reform bill.
The group stated that Senator Barau neither introduced the bill nor expressed personal opinions on it. Instead, he facilitated presentations from experts, including Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee.
“This same presentation had been made to the House of Representatives and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum without controversy,” the statement said.
The group criticized Senator Ndume’s approach during the debate, accusing him of creating a misleading narrative by portraying Senator Barau as promoting an anti-North agenda.
“Such behavior undermines the Senate’s integrity and fosters division,” the statement added.
The group urged Nigerians to seek accurate information about the tax reform bill and avoid forming opinions based on misinformation. They also cautioned Senator Ndume against actions that could harm Senator Barau’s reputation.
The tax reform bill remains under review, with further discussions expected in subsequent Senate sessions.
